I would have given it 5 stars but it has a fatal bug at the moment and if you try to playback any files recorded with 30ND time code the machine Hangs and you have to remove the batteries to reset it.

It can be daunting at first but every menu setting is covered completely in the full manual. I only just got the Zoom F6 a short time ago and so my review here is based on first impressions. The unit is shockingly small and if you are used to the standard size mixers you will almost be disappointed in how small this is.

The unit is VERY light as well, making it well suited for field recording or mobile recording. Construction seems to be durable, but, the layout and compactness of this unit almost seem unnecessary. The gain knobs are tightly packed together, which is not a bad thing, just a bit tight.

The menu buttons are even smaller but do not hinder operation. The forgiving grace about the whole thing is the recorder’s 32bit float feature which makes clipping mostly a thing of the past.

As a first-generation unit, Zoom has taken bold steps to answer the future needs of recordists out there. Did they hit the nail on the head? As for any recommendation as to if you should buy it? Consider not having to set gain or worry about clipping or low floor noise in a recorder that can be powered in three different ways and with six inputs. Had Zoom made the body slightly wider they could have staggered the knobs and allowed room in the chassis to put in better connections, like SDI time-code, Line Out options and a second card slot.

Maybe on the MKii? I have had the privilege to work with all kinds of expensive and legendary equipment, this is by far the best value for the price and the bit float will be magical for newbies and pro’s alike.

Gave it a four-star because there is room to improve this unit, but it may very well be a legend in the making. I bought this recorder after trying and returning a Sound Devices MixPre 6 ii as the MixPre had a few flaws that I couldn’t get used to.

Having used the F6 a few times now I find it to be every bit as good as the MixPre, except for the peerless preamps that Sound Devices have perfected over their many years as a top notch Pro Audio supplier. The F6 has a more sterile sound than the richness of the MixPre, but that suited me for my purposes. The F6 is easily set up to your liking using the clear and easy to follow menu system.

And, if you choose bit, the F6 will record everything from near-silence to deafening with no clipping. All you have to do is use compression in your editing program to bring both extremes out clearly and with no distortion. The F6 is much more efficient power-wise than the MixPre, and the AA battery option is actually viable, compared to the power hungry MixPre, which will demolish a set of AA’s in less than a half-hour.

There is a holder built in for the option to use a Sony L-type battery which will last for hours and hours. You can also power it via a Micro USB cable and a power pack if you wish. The F6 offers Timecode in and out. It is at the very back of the unit to allow for the AA battery sled, and this means the connection bears a whole lot of the weight on it and can be wobbly. The menu offers a great many choices of recording modes and input options and is easily run through, although the small buttons means no gloves on when doing this.

All in all a great little recorder, very powerful for its small size, and is a great choice for anyone trying to up their audio game from a camera’s included audio. The quality of the camera track is pretty darn good comparable to what I got with Tascam DRD and the unclippable recording in the F6 is fabulous. Great pre-amps in this thing. You have to tighten it by reaching underneath the bottom from the left and right of the camera, which is pretty awkward.

One of the reasons I got F6 was that it is not just a field recorder, but also an audio interface on my Mac. It does a great job on this score, too. Admittedly, the minimalist controls necessitated by this field recorder being so small, make it a little cumbersome to use as audio interface. And adjusting levels for audio interface are not at all obvious.
